GETTING YOUR BUSINESS SET UP


Before you can begin operating your business, you need to make sure to have the paper work in place. All businesses are required to have a City of Bethel Business License and a State of Alaska Business License.

 
CITY OF BETHEL BUSINESS LICENSING PROCESS


1. Complete the City Business License Application 
When requesting a copy of the Business License Application please be able to identify what type of business you will be operating. 
 
2. Submit your Business License Application to the Business Licensing and Sales Tax Division. 
Depending on the type of business, a review may be required by other departments. 


3. Wait for the City to review the business license application and charge you the corresponding rate for the license. 


4. Following receipt of payment, you can pick up or we will mail you your Business License. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTAIN BUSINESS TYPES

Business required to provide receipts must ensure the following information is listed on the receipt: 
  • Name of Business
  • Phone Number of Business
  • Date of Sale 
  • Amount of Sale
  • Amount of Sales Tax
  • Amount of Sales Tax Exempted
  • Amount Collected
  • Method of Payment
  • Receipt Number (pre-numbered or machine numbered)
  • Quantity of the Goods Sold
  • Description of the Goods/Services Sold

 

If you are operating any of the following business types, you are required to have a cash register with a "Z" function. 

  • Restaurant/Eating Establishments
  • Movie Theaters
  • Grocery Stores
  • Retail Stores
  • Coffee Stands
  • Convenience Stores

What is a "Z" Tape? Z tape” means the report feature of a cash register which records the total transactions, such as sales by type, the number of customers and the number of items rung in for the period; the transactional total of the current day’s receipts.

 

If you are operating any of the following business types, you are required to have either sequentially number receipts or invoice books: 

  • Construction
  • Trades (plumbing, electrical, carpet installation)
  • Transient Lodging
  • Professional Services (accounting services, Tax preparation, veterinary care)
